LENs publishes overview of MRV protocol

1 December 2025

Following its first Impact Report earlier this year, LENs has today shared a summary of its Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) protocol from which the data for the report was gathered. The MRV programme has been running for three years, and provides funders and farmers with robust data on both ecological and socio-economic impacts.

With the latest SBTI v2 out for consultation, companies need clarity on the opportunities to take responsibility for their emissions and how to find the right schemes to suit them. By summarising our MRV approach we make it simpler for companies to decide what’s right for them.

In the spirit of collaboration, the LENs team wants to iterate the protocol transparently, so has chosen to share more details publicly. The team continues to use the detailed protocol for technical audiences and external verification bodies.

The overview covers:

  • Our unique approach to MRV, which is: aligned with leading protocols and reporting; cost effective and scalable; upholds the highest standards in farm data governance; delivers traceability; and handles complexity
  • Details of the results framework and KPIs, which reports on soil health, water, biodiversity, climate mitigation and farmers’ economic resilience and wellbeing
  • Details of how we align with external standards
  • An insight into how we measure outcomes, looking at ex-post reporting; year-on-year change; whole-farm scope; attribution and additionality; measurement tools; and removals permanence
  • Our quality assurance and data processing
  • How we allocate claims
  • How stacking works with other schemes

Catherine Wallis, LENs Impact Director, explained why the team is sharing this insight into how LENs MRV works, saying: “LENs is gaining recognition as one of the first multi-funder programmes to measure and report at scale in all our landscapes, and allocate outcomes across different stakeholders. We speak with a wide range of audiences, and there was a clear need to have a simple, easy-to-access summary of our MRV systems and their benefits.”
